Google’s Affiliate Policy

Posted in Questions and Comments at 4:08 am by rishi

Hi,

First of all I would like to thank you for the wonderful book, it really opened my eyes about Affiliate Marketing.

On some further research I came across Google’s affiliate policy at http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=14844 that states “We’ll only display one ad per search query for advertisers sharing the same top-level domain in the display url.” This appears to be a problem for search advertisers as it could greatly reduce chances our ad getting showed, unless ofcoarse we build our own website.

What are your thoughts on this?

    Rishi,

Sorry for the delay. I moved in June. Just now catching up.

This particular policy of AdWord’s scared me at first, but actually increased my volume in the long term. (well, at least until it prompted some affiliate programs to do the search marketing for themselves).

For a search marketer focused on ad copy (and a surprising number of them aren’t) this policy can really help you corner the market on running an ad for a particular affiliate program against a particular keyword, or list of keywords.

The downside, is it will take a little longer to get started, as your ad will show less than it might have before this policy. But once you beat the existing ads performance, your ad will quickly get most of the available clicks for that program in that space.

    Tony
